Discussion Emotional Quotes from Fiction

Now, the mark of a good author is one who can craft the words and story in such a way that with a simple turn of phrase, they can generate emotional responses in the reader. This can be humor for laughter, angst for sadness, and others for other emotions. What are some quotes that have caused these sorts of responses in you?

One for me is the following:

"Had to be me. Anyone else would have gotten it wrong..." - Mordin Solus, Mass Effect 3

    Aioria Lewd Santa

(This is a paraphrase as I don't remember the actual dialogue and don't have time to look for it right now but it went something like this)

Noi Crescent: Why did you had no problem telling your wish to that kid (To heal his grandfather's illness) but kept it for yourself around the other ones?

Yuuhi Amamiya: It's because that kid sees me as an adult.

    Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer.

  4. Positive grief management strategies are pretty rare in fiction. Luckily there are still stories about triumph through adversity.

This particular quote just recalls a sense of exhausted joy, hope for the future, and exhilaration at victory long thought impossible. Like just for one moment, a world on the the brink of despair and destruction found a reason to celebrate a victory of defiance against the doom that looms on the horizon, and a hope for survival. Just one moment in an endless war in which the best humanity could do was to watch it's Heroes (and Villains) fight and die heroically to delay the coming fall, where the world could catch it's breath and realize that the end hadn't just been delayed, it had been pushed back and possibly stopped. It's honestly one of my favorite moments in the entirety of Worm.

Which of course, just makes it more sad when it turns out it didn't matter in the end, but I still think it was an incredibly powerful moment.

  10. "I was talking about my rules. I have lived by those rules for so long, believed in them for so long, believed that if you played by the right rules, eventually you would win. But I was wrong, wasn't I? And now all the people I cared about are dead. Or will be dead soon enough. And we will be gone without a trace. So now I have to decide. Decide whether to let my friends die, to let hope die, to let the world be ground under your heel all because I played by my rules. I'm trying to decide. I'm going to kill you. But I need to decide how far I'm willing to go. How many of my own rules I'm willing to break to get it done."

"Welcome to Barrayar, son. Here you go; have a world of wealth and poverty, wrenching change and rooted history. Have a birth; have two. Have a name. Miles means "soldier", but don't let the power of suggestion overwhelm you. Have a twisted form in a society that loathes and fears the mutations that have been its deepest agony. Have a title, wealth, power, and all the envy and hatred they will draw. Have your body ripped apart and rearranged. Inherit an array of friends and enemies you never made. Have a grandfather from hell. Endure pain, find joy, and make your own meaning, because the universe certainly isn't going to supply it. Always be a moving target. Live. Live. Live."

  14. 'The earth rumbled, and clouds of dust were blown up as Ionioi Hetairoi approached...'
    - the description of Alexander the great's army of heroes crashing down on Gilgamesh during one of the last fights of fate/zero.

'Admiral spire, it is said heresy is like a tree. It's roots lie in darkness, while its leaves lay in the sun. You can prune away its branches, even cut the tree down, but it will grow back, ever stronger. Such is the nature of heresy, and why it is so difficult to destroy. Some may question my right to destroy a world with ten billion souls, but those that truly understand, realize I have no right to let them live. No sacrifice is too great. No treachery too small. '
-Explanation of why exterminatus was necessary.

'I saw her lips form the word, ''Maggie..

    And i...

    I used the knife.

    I saved a child.

    I won war.

    God forgive me.'
    - Harry Dresden. If you don't know where this came from, you have lost something.

Can we just use clips? Because having typed this scene out I don't think it translates well in the written word.

  23. Elijah: You've heard of the Sierra Madre Casino.

Christine: We all have...the legend, the curses.

Dean: Some foolishness about it lying in the middle of a City of Dead.

    Dog: A city of ghosts.

    God: Beneath a blood-red cloud...

Dean: ...a bright, shining monument, reaching out, luring treasure hunters to their doom. An illusion.

Christine: A promise that you can change your fortunes. Begin again.

Elijah: Finding it, though, that's not the hard part. It's letting go.

    Dean: It's letting go.

    Christine: It's letting go.

    Dog: It's letting go.

    God: It's letting go.
