Yeah, you'll fit in just fine.
I suppose that you find that amusing, and I think I understand why, but also take in fact that I don't even know if Hyuuga or Uchiha even exist inside this fanfic, for all I know it could be that there is no eye technique whatsoever, and if you could help me with getting around and understanding the ins and outs of the fundamental laws of this fanfic setup I would be grateful until the day I die.

Btw, if you can't understand what I was asking for help was, it is basically like this (example): Naruto finds himself on another planet where he doesn't know the mechanics of how something works, like does this place have the trees I know, is the air the same here, or whatnot.

Just let them watch more of the plays by the guys who did Cody's Ninja Lab.

This is mostly like canon except (nearly) everyone is smarter and plot holes are ironed out. For example, there is an Uchiha massacre but the children and civilians are spared, Naruto is treated well and known as the 4th son because mistreating your jinchuuriki is dumb.

Also, everything runs off rom-com logic.
It's simulationist, meaning there is consequences to what we do and there are hidden rolls for things that we indirectly affect even if we don't see it play out in a chapter.

Naruto and all the Leaf nins from canon still exist though they are NPCs (they still do their own thing but we can't control their actions until we finish the mind control seal).

The thread collectively plays one character: Kurosawa Hazou, a young missing-nin from Mist who

who eventually joins Leaf and meets characters from canon that you should recognize.

You can vote for whatever you want, if the vote wins then the character will do his best to follow the plan unless external factors prevent him from doing it or it is physically impossible (i.e. don't tell him to grow wings and fly).
I would like to say thanks to: MMKII, faflec, Tua, OliWhail, MadScientist and Inferno Vulpix for the explanation of where to find the information I need, and for the help they provided me by answering my questions. Thank you for lending me your time! <3

Thank you for the explanation, but how does the voting work, do all the people in this thread discuss let's say if Kurosawa Hazou encounters Orochimaru, do we vote what the outcome is about their encounter.
Like for example: Orochimaru kidnaps Kurosawa Hazou and starts experimenting on him, or he injures him or whatever happens between them, also if he is kidnapped do we vote if he gets experimented on and Orochi gives him some kind of ability or illness or disease? And how does the voting work do we all just agree on lets say 4 things to vote between, otherwise there could be probably 100 or 200 things people could vote for?
^that was just an example btw^

People usually put together plans to vote on based on the context of where Hazou is and what we want him to do.

Its fairly open ended, but contextual limitations do stop us from doing anything at all. (Can't ask Orochimaru for experimentation if we don't know where he is.)

The usual medium for plan creation is bulletpoint lists. For example:

[X] Action Plan: Purchase a Youthsuit and Go Drink Tea

  • Go down to the market square and see if you can find a green spandex suit to buy.
    • Make sure that it is youthful enough.
    • Beware of potential assassins.
      • Do not appear overtly cautious though.
    • Purchase some nice sake as well.
  • Chat with some random people at the bar.
    • Try to figure out if any of them are ninja.
      • Do not give away any secrets!
    • Eat some food.
      • Make sure it isn't poisoned.
    • Drink some tea.
      • Pretend that it is sake.
  • Practice your taijutsu in the woods.
    • Make sure you are alone.
    • Choose a log at random.
      • You must defend this log from imaginary attackers!
Anyone who posts "[X] Action Plan: Purchase a Youthsuit and Go Drink Tea" will then have voted for the plan I put above.

The plan with the most votes gets acted on by Hazou, if he can act on it in character in a reasonable way.

That's the gist of things, more or less.

We only get to control Hazou and therefore the only thing votes can do is instruct Hazou what to do when things happen to him. He can try to convince other people to go along if the plan is written well (and his team usually does so unless we make a huge mistake they need to point out).

So in your example if Orochimaru abducts us you could make a plan that talks him into making us his student, or tries to kill him when he isn't looking or anything else you can think of that Hazou could physically do.

Check out one of the earlier chapters and click on the title of the chapter. It will link you to the plan that won for that update so you can see how things get implemented.

Only the highest voted plan wins unless the plans do not conflict with each other (i.e. a Training Plan + Action Plan (the "normal plan") could both win).

Also the character himself has to have in-story justification for doing things. He can't go out and tell people he knows that Pein has the Rinnegan because that is player knowledge only (and that is assuming this tidbit wasn't changed when the world became less stupid).

We vote by making Action Plans, write-in descriptions of everything we want Hazou to do in the immediate future, but we don't control anything other than Hazou. If Orochimaru kidnaps us, we can vote to struggle or to try and bargain with him or to ask to be his apprentice and help take over the world, but Orochimaru's motivations are his own and if he wants to cut open our nervous system and study the Iron Nerve up close then that's what's going to happen unless Hazou's actions convince him otherwise somehow.

So, for instance, various voters would write up different plans like these:
[jk] Action Plan: ESCAPE
  • <A bunch of actions Hazou should take in order to try and slip free from Orochimaru's clutches>

[jk] Action Plan: Bargain for our lives
  • <A bunch of stuff for Hazou to say in the hopes that Orochimaru will spare his life>

[jk] Action Plan: I've been waiting for this day my entire life
  • <A bunch of stuff for Hazou to say in the hopes that Orochimaru recognizes our strategic usefulness and ideological alignment and lets us team up with him instead of dissecting us>

And people would then vote for whichever one they like most and make suggestions and stuff.

Hello, sorry for bothering you all but I have a few questions about this fan fiction.
Hi, I'm one of the QM team and just wanted to say this is not a bother at all! It's always cool to see new people :)

How does this all work, I mean like how does the plot go, is it anything like the main Naruto canon plot or even remotely like most generic Naruto fanfictions, or will I be thrown out of the loop when I start reading it.... I mean what are the fundamental laws of this fanfic, like lets say in this universe fire isn't put out by water, you get what I mean, right?
It sounds like you're already familiar with most of the ideas in the Naruto-verse, but for the sake of completeness -
  • The creatures that inhabit the world are various levels of scary, but are generally a lot more dangerous than real life
  • Some humans, called 'ninja', have crazy physical strength and can do magic stuff
  • One major category of magic-ninja-stuff, called 'ninjutsu', involves expelling magic energy ('chakra'). The other category involves using special patterns of ink ('fuinjutsu' or 'sealing') to cause magical effects.
  • There are some creatures ('Tailed Beasts') made of pure chakra. As far as the player thread knows at the start of the story, they are contained inside the bodies of some ninja by the use of sealing techniques.
  • The political landscape is divided into five major nations and a bunch of allied minor nations. Almost all nations have an organized ninja presence
  • As far as the player thread knows at the start of the story, the countries of Sand and Fire are generally allied, Lightning and Earth are generally neutral, and Water is generally isolationist and particularly dislikes Fire
  • The player character, Hazou, originates in the land of Water, in the Vilalge Hidden in the Mist, and at the start of the story has been declared a traitor and forced to flee to a swamp in the remote part of Fire
Is this fanfic only about self inserts or does the story develop any characters on Naruto like team 12, and other additional characters of the Naruto universe or is it an RPG fanfic based in Naruto universe and adding rationality
The fic eventually touches on some of the major canon characters - feel free to ask more if you're okay with spoilers :)

Also can anybody join in or are all the characters already taken?

Anybody can vote. There is only one character, whose actions (not outcomes) everyone decides together, using approval voting - you just put a [X] in front of the name of a plan on its own line of text, and you can make, and argue for/against, and vote for, as many plans as you want.

This thread is kind of infamous on Sufficient Velocity for having complicated plans, so if that's not so much your thing then please feel free to just read and talk about things :)

Yes, there are trees. Some of them are carnivorous chakra-trees with a taste for human flesh.

Yes the air is safe to breathe. Except for the carnivorous chakra-air with a taste for human flesh.

Yeah, I understood the question, it's just that stealing eyeballs (and other behaviours in a similar vein) is something of a meme in-thread.

If you want an explanation of the AU elements, the others have explained fairly okay, but I'll give it a stab:
  • Tech level is "feudal japan", so no electronics.
  • There are lots of OC clans, especially from mist.
  • Chakra-mutant animals and plants are a constant threat to civilisation.
  • Non-ninja have zero power over ninja, except when they form unions.
  • Mist killed any civilians who tried to unionise until they stopped doing that, but never had a civil war.
  • Sealing is heavily expanded upon.
  • There are no ninja ostriches.

Did we ever figure out where skills like Taijutsu level are stored? Like, could we steal Akane's fists and transplant them on ourselves to make us punch harder (On our elbows maybe for double the fists = double the punching power = double the Taijutsu level = double the EJ enjoyment?).

NOBURI: Hazou, you are no longer allowed near my medical supplies.
HAZOU: That's fine, I am pretty sure I saw a vendor sell glue right around the corner. I do warn you though, should her fists start smelling because they are rotting you have no one to blame but yourself since you had to be such a spoil sport and take away my toys your supplies. Now nothing can tear us apart, Akane. We will be together forever.

Marked for Death is socialist propaganda confirmed :p
To be fair, it seems to be switching genres often.

But unfortunately my attempts to turn it into a body horror story don't seem to be very successful because people have the audacity of having morals.
I mean, is it that much of a stretch to go from wearing a CHAOS suit to an AKANE suit for improved combat performance?

Alright, so...Spoilers.
  • We don't know how true-to-canon a lot of people are. Don't ask what happened to Obito. Hazou doesn't know.
  • We don't know a lot of techniques other people have. Don't ask if the Mangekyo Sharingan exists, because HAZOU DOESN'T KNOW (a Tsukuyomi-like technique was used, but it is unclear if it is Tsukuyomi).
  • Lots of clans are OC because Kishimoto isn't great with worldbuilding outside of Leaf. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE OC BLOODLINES AND POST THEM WHERE THE QMS CAN SEE YOU. THEY WILL MAKE THEM CANON AND USE THEM TO TRY AND KILL YOU.
  • We are in ~12th century Japan/Asia, meaning no computers, no radios, and no guns. If you are unfamiliar with what 12th century Asia is like, it sucks.
  • The world of Marked for Death is worse than normal, because this is a deathworld, meaning literally everything has evolved ways to try and kill you. The reason everything is out to kill you is because chakra exists, and has seeped into the natural flora/fauna. Meaning they can use chakra for their own taijutsu, ninjutsu, genjutsu, etc.. All of which is used to kill you.
  • Ninjas are extremely powerful due to the ability to use chakra, bloodlines, and generally better quality of life. Consequently, they represent an absurdly overpowered upper class who can slaughter significant numbers of civilians without having to worry. In other words, the canon plot point of "Haku's family of ninjas is killed by civilians" or the "armless Zabuza is killed by Gato's civilian mercenaries" never happens. Because ninjas are bullshit.
  • It is generally accepted that the Sot6P was responsible for giving chakra to the world. Whether this is true or not is yet to be definitively established.
  • Word of QM says that Zetsu, Kaguya, and the Moon's Eye Plan do not exist. This is because those plotlines are dumb.
  • All summons are in a different dimension. A literal different dimension, you can't walk to Mount Myōboku. Legend has it that the Sage created said dimension, and the Summoning Scrolls to allow communications (and other things) to go between said dimensions. There are a lot of legends about the Sage.
  • Hashirama still formed Leaf, with many other villages responding in kind soon after. Madara still exists, betrayed Hashirama, and lost their battle. It is unclear if Madara survived or not.
  • Villages consist of mostly clans with bloodlines who joined forces in order to avoid getting slaughtered by big villages (though some exceptions still exist). Civilian-born ninjas are considered barely above missing-nin in the sense that they have no loyalty to any clan, though things are improving. Somewhat.
  • The Land of Iron is an impoverished shithole. The leader, the 'Liberator', attempted to overthrow the ninja order due to the oppression of ninjas, and supposedly had some way of enhancing the civilian population to be capable of fighting ninjas. The ninjas did not like the idea of being overthrown and banded together to stop that. Which means that they slaughtered the lot of them.
  • The three ninja world wars still happened. Kakashi still got the Sharingan, and nobody knows how he didn't die in the process (12th century tech should not have allowed a successful eye transplant). Uzugakure was still destroyed, because they were insanely powerful sealmasters and an international coalition didn't like the idea of them having power. Shit went down, nobody knows exactly what happened. The entire invading force, and Uzugakure, went poof and vanished.
  • Yagura is...not insane as he was in canon. He's still an authoritarian asshole who introduced significant oppressive laws in Mist and generally made the quality of life there shit...but he's not stupid. No massacres of clans (save the Kaguya, who were still, apparently, insane), no 'kill your teammate to graduate the Academy'...that would be self-destructive. So it didn't happen. He's still the Sanbi Jinchuriki, or was until [SPOILERS].
  • Akatsuki exists, with all canon members save Tobi (unseen) and Zetsu (retcon'd) having made an off-screen appearance. Their motivations are still unknown to us.
  • Orochimaru still left Konoha. His true motivations are unknown (but probably still sinister).
  • Naruto is still the Kyuubi Jinchuriki (blah blah or was), but Konoha treated him kindly because neglecting your jinchuriki is dumb. He's openly the Yondaime's son and Jiraiya's godson, and Jiraiya pretty much raised him. Properly, this time. He is far more skilled than he was in P1 of canon, and was able to defeat Zabuza with his abilities (NB: Zabuza is the thread's bogeyman and a low-S class ninja here. He's not a scrub like in canon).
  • The Hyuga Incident is unknown to have actually happened.
  • The Uchiha Massacre still happened, but Itachi spared Sasuke and civilian Uchiha. Whether the massacre was ordered or not is unknown to the playerbase.
  • Many of your expected characters may be somewhat OOC due to QMs deciding that their canon selves, and the reasonings for them being like this, is dumb. Hinata acts far more confident because Hiashi would not neglect his daughter and heir apparent in such a dumb ass way. The Hyuga as a whole are elitist as fuck (they're kinda assholes, you know?). Tenten got characterization.
That's the background. Now, since the players decided to semi-mind control our main character (Hazou)...
  • We fled Mist as missing-nin and went to hide in Leaf. Which was a mother fucking dumb ass decision, since Leaf has a whole fuckton of sensor-types. We (Hazou, his teammates Noburi and Keiko, their sensei Mari) escaped the budding hidden village and left them all to die horribly.
  • We got recruited into Jiraiya's off-the-books spy network and infiltrated the quoteSecond Coming Of The Liberatorunquote. Which was a front for Orochimaru's sneks. We got a new teammate (Akane), who is a female, and less insane, version of Rock Lee.
  • Kagome joined the party. He is a paranoid conspiracy theorist who reguarly fears mind-control chakra plants being inserted into his various orifices. He is also an explosives sealmaster and likes blowing stuff up.
  • We traveled to Tea and mucked around finding a Summoning Scroll. In the process we rediscovered a truly Hidden Village (since they isolated themselves for four hundred-odd years) and proceeded to upend their entire social structure by taking their sacred artifiact (the Summoning Scroll) and leaving. Keiko signed the Pangolin Summoning Contract, and got a cute little Pandaa.
  • We traveled to Hot Springs, a demilitarized zone known for its resorts and...well, hot springs, to steal a message. We proceeded to kill a Jonin, two civilians, and a Chunin (?), and wrecked part of an inn. We were also spotted. This resulted in Hot Springs allying with Mist in order to kill us, since Yagura still retained his murderboner for missing-nin, and polarized the continent because Mist gained access to a continental front to send its ninjas to attack other countries like Leaf.
  • Jiraiya made us go to the Land of Rice, which isn't openly controlled by Orochimaru. We kidnapped a biosealer (if you know Worm, think Bonesaw) and cut off parts of her face.
  • We got to interact with Leaf-nin (yay!) and then got stuck in a killbox (NAY!). Jiraiya kicked us out.
  • We fled to Iron, Snow (which is an inhospitable shithole where barely anything lives), and then to some small summer islands south of nowhere. In the process we discovered that a seal we had access to let us cheat out flight (Skywalkers). We promptly sold said seals to Jiraiya in exchanged for becoming Leaf-nin and his adopted clan. We also sold seals that allow for airborne platforms (Skytowers) to the Pangolins.
  • Flight is a big deal in this world. A ninja who can fly has an obscene advantage over a ninja who can't. Leaf promptly began planning to decapitate Mist's leadership in order prevent the next Ninja World War. They then carried out their plan, using Naruto as bait. They mostly succeeded, except Hiruzen died fighting Yagura. Apparently he had a bad day.
  • Unfortunately, Akatsuki managed to find out about their battle and kidnapped Naruto and Yagura. And slaughtered everyone else save Jiraiya*, who barely managed to get out alive.
    • *Naruto's Jonin-sensei, Nakamura (yes, not Kakashi), survived because he fled when Akatsuki attacked. Zabuza faked his death, although Hazou doesn't know that.
  • Jiraiya took the position of Godaime Hokage by threatening to murder the clans if they didn't comply, and also fulfilled his promise to us by adopting us as his clan. Hiashi is pissed at this and has been plotting to overthrow Jiraiya and take the hat himself.
  • We went on a long-term courier mission with Minami Nikko, a member of a potentially allied clan. Who then died, and her clan blamed us and we lost a fuckton of money as a result. We are now broke.
  • The Chunin Exams started (yay!) in Mist (NAY!). We went because not doing so would show weakness, and Jiraiya's position is tenuous.
  • Keiko solved our problems by selling Pangolins more Skytowers. More on this later.
  • We went to the Chunin Exams. Mist was a bunch of petty assholes, but we managed to make the tournament (where we are now). It was looooooong.
  • It turns out the Pangolins are the Summoning Realm's equivalent of Nazis. And we just kickstarted their expansion and genocide of their races. But we can't stop givin them Skytowers, since then we'd be broke again and our position would be FUBAR. Oh noes.
  • Hazou's mother got to go to Leaf as a "diplomat" (yay!) and then proceeded to turn our adoptive mother into a suicidal mess (NAY!). Jiraiya responded by beating the fuck out of her and kicking her out of Leaf (yay?). Tsunade has been trying to help her. Akane (our ex-girlfriend/teammate/fellow ex-missing nin) tried to do it a different way. Tsunade popped her. Akane's funeral is scheduled for next week.
  • We are now at the tournament. Leaf has won every single one of their matches unless they were fighting against fellow Leaf-nin. Noburi lost to Hinata, which is bad because it makes the Goketsu look weak relative to the Hyuga, their political rivals.
That's a...condensed summary.

We can guide Hazou in his research, make him curious about avenues of research we know are fruitful, as long as we're subtle about it, but we can't inject information into his head. For instance, if we want to invent radio, we can have Hazou start tinkering around with springs and wires and Lightning jutsu and investigating their properties, and then try to coax him into discovering 'holy heck you can make one thing listen to another thing at a distance' and then expanding that into a coherent radio system.

We fully intend to have Hazou invent and discover all sorts of things over his lifetime, and we can get him working on stuff that'll provide results instead of something that's a dead end or just plain wrong like miasma theory, but it all has to make sense IC.

As for plan duration, we can plan as much or as little as we want to, and the QM will do their best to write a full update worth of stuff from it. If we have too much stuff in the plan for Hazou to do in one chapter, they'll just pick a good breakpoint to end the chapter and let us make a new plan. Similarly, if something happens that interrupts the plan (Your week of research was cut short when Itachi broke into your inner sanctum) then the QMs are likely to stop it there and let us adjust things.

Can't discover these things without in-story knowledge but as long it can build on previous knowledge, no matter how primitive he could get there.

For example, players have wanted to invent zeppelins for a long time and at one point Hazou saw that hot air rises while watching the campfire which would be enough to get research into that started. Don't expect it to be either fast or easy though.

Thank you all for the extensive replies to my questions! <3

I will be reading every piece of information I can get my hands on so that hopefully I can somehow contribute to at least a very basic development to this world's technology.

Btw, as Tua said Hazou saw that hot air rises while watching the campfire. Did you guys make him do that like for example, did you do it like this for that zeppelin research:

Hazou gathered the materials needed for the campfire and lit it up for him and his friends. Then he sat on a log near the campfire and stared aimlessly into the campfire's flames, and he noticed that hot air was moving upwards from the fire.
Can we just make him follow step by step for developing zeppelins, but we start very basic like with the hot air, then we make him observe balloons and how they float, and etc. And does it have to take too much time like, let's say that QM limit it so that it would be rational that he will make a zeppelin in let's say 7 or 8 years or can we make Hazou observer and influence him into pumping hot air into balloons and maybe later on into the paper mache sphere's in like 10 days? And be done with zeppelins in a month?

We've already given Hazou the idea to make hot air balloons, but haven't really gotten all that far past that.

Did you complete the third re-examination of the safety procedures the art history liaison is demanding to ensure that you don't accidentally divide by zero and destroy the Earth? Oh crap, we forgot to save the paperwork proving that the abaci storage cabinet's tracking thermometer was from an approved vendor! Better throw out the last six months of theorems.

New plan: We’ll have Noburi include a “drain and refill” program for all of his checkups on ninja, under the umbrella of “med-nin discretion”, and then we’ll call it a retrospective study :V
I love that essay so much. I used to struggle endlessly to try to convey what it's like, and now I can just point people at it.

The flora has similarities, but tends to be much more difficult to catch.
