    Some notes on ship design:

    Combat, Science, and Shields are the big power drains.
    Frame, Science, Hull, Presence, and Defense are the biggest weight sinks, with an emphasis on Hull.

    Proposed SDB timeline:

    2308 (now) - keep researching key techs. Construction L1, etc. Begin Rennaisance project.
    2311 - Begin USS Renaissance
    2313-14 - finish techs, begin Ambassador project
    2318-19 - finish project, begin USS Ambassador.
    2323 - begin Kepler ship design project, with a science equal or slightly greater than the Ambassador.
    2325 - USS Ambassador finished. Start Kepler lead ship and USS Enterprise-C
    2326 - FYM 6 begins. All missions are shortened by one year to allow for a rolling refit.
    2328 - USS Kepler finished.
    2329 - USS Enterprise-C commissioned

    Notes: any "off year" EC ships will be sent on shorter extended shakedown cruises/X Year Missions.

    Prerequisites:
    Rennaissiance - Low hanging fruit
    Ambassador - All T1 (barring medical, personal, mineral), most T2 (SC, WC, WCS, SF, SRS, DS, Xp, Exp-Sci, Exp-Eng)

    In the 2320s, with the introduction of the Ambassador-class Explorer, Starfleet's Five Year Mission capabilities will be pushed into the 24th century. However, at home, our main science ship design, the Oberth-class, will be over 60 years old, limiting our scientific capabilities. On a more strategic note, outside of select Exploration Corps Explorers, our Oberths have sensor suites rivaling those of a mainline Excelsior, a capability that served Starfleet well in the Battle of Kadesh Orbit, and the campaign against the Biophage's cloaked ships leading up to it. In the 2320s, with advances in cloaking technology, it is probable that even those sensors will be insufficient for piercing cloaking – a problem compounded by the possibility of proliferation of cloaking technology.
    After the discovery of an unidentified module of Klingon and Orion origin on a Cardassian Kaldar-class Cruiser, it is possible that they have access to Klingon cloaking technology, and perhaps even the advanced cloak used by General Chang. With the positive identification of the Klingon-Orion module as General Chang's advanced cloaking device, improved sensors and survivability is even more important.

    The Modular Escort Ship Series is designed around the idea of a single frame with a superstructure capable of mounting multiple mission packages. Using the Bureau's 2320s technology projections, it is possible to fit a next-generation sensor suite and supporting scientific labs in the proposed superstructure, while still allowing the ship to be refitted with phaser banks, torpedo launchers, and additional shield emitters should the need arise. Those variants are designated as the Kepler and Peregrine subclasses, respectively. A final variant, the Franklin subclass, is designed around diplomatic and police work, featuring less austere quarters and an additional brig. While the facilities are not comparable to those of the Excelsior, they are sufficient for operations against organized crime and use as a diplomatic transport.

    However, the proposed baseline ship is still very capable, with a hull and shields better than those of the Constellation and its proposed refit, and a better hull than that of the Centaur-A. The baseline also features speed and endurance surpassed only by the Constitutions, Excelsiors, and Renaissance, that is, our Explorers and our newest cruiser design.

    In combat, the baseline is capable of adequately supporting larger vessels as part of a fleet. Like our existing vessels, it is not recommended that non-Peregrine subclasses battle larger vessels alone. However, the Peregrine is much more capable – with the extra phaser emitters and torpedo launchers aboard its superstructure, along with the extra shield emitters, it can take down all but the heaviest of enemies. The current-generation Romulan Bird-of-Prey loses in most of the simulated battles, and the Klingon K'tinga, and the Cardassian Jaldun and Takaaki are its approximate equals.

    That helped a bit, but only bumped it up to 97.79% reliable. I don't consider a design sub-98% to be viable, especially something that goes on 5YM

    Edit:Messing around more got the reliability up to 98.81%, mostly by maxing out warp core fine-tuning, which shaved a LOT of weight without tanking reliability one bit.

    Nope, because I've got it above 99% reliability, AND costing a bit cheaper by 20sr.

    The only techs we'd really wait for at this point would be ones that let us put 5 hull on it without tanking reliability, and you'd have to tell me what those are because I'm not sure.

    The warp core fine-tuning seems suspiciously like a balance issue. Level 5 costs nothing, which should not happen.

    Looking into the formulas, we get +4% from not redlining. Yup, balance. @OneirosTheWriter, you might want to decrease the reliability buff from not redlining by changing it from square to square root or something.
